I'm currently focusing my studies on my Final Year Project which aims to leverage voice user interface technology to improve mental health reporting. I'm really enjoying working on this project as it requires a lot of front-end creativity and provides an interesting back end challenge.
Voice user interfaces (VUIs), such as devices using Google Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa, and Apple’s Siri, have become increasingly widespread. People are encouraged by the companies who produce these interfaces to develop applications that can be run by them and provide considerable developer tools to support this. These interfaces offer an interesting way to provide mental health support to users as the interactions could resemble those of human-delivered therapy. An activity involved in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (a common treatment for mental illness) is mood logging. Mood logging involves individuals regularly recording and reflecting on their mood and related factors such as sleep, menstrual cycle, and exercise. The purpose of this project is to explore the capabilities of consumer VUI devices for mood logging applications.
The demand for mental health supports currently exceeds its supply. This is particularly true amongst young adults, 40% of whom in the United States don't receive the mental health supports that they need (Wang, 2021). Many of the factors contributing to poor mental health have been exacerbated by the mass isolation and added stresses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
There is a growing interest in mental health apps for self-monitoring and self-assessment. Improvements in natural language understanding and the mass adoption of virtual assistant devices have broadened the scope of possibility for self-monitoring applications. Considering this, an opportunity exists to streamline the mood logging and journaling process and provide mental health services through a more natural medium, voice.
